MOVEMENT

FMS and SFMA

Alliance Health offers comprehensive movement assessments including the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). Once you have been assessed with these tools we provide comprehensive programs to correct the movement dysfunctions.

Human movement comes from muscles and joints working in sync to produce movement. The 3 main components that are essential in producing human movement are mobility, stability and control. Mobility involves having muscle length (flexibility) and joint range of motion allowing a particular movement to happen. Stability involves the muscles and tissues around a joint providing inherent strength and support for the movement. The final piece is control – control comes from our nervous system. Our nervous system carefully orchestrates movement by activating muscles to move or stabilize, resulting in movement patterns and ultimately the movement necessary to complete the task at hand. If one or more of these components are missing then we have what is called movement dysfunction. If movement dysfunction is left unaddressed there will be compensation. We believe that compensation will ultimately lead to pain and/or injury.

Functional Movement Screen (FMS):

The FMS is a tool that breaks down basic human movement and allows us to identify dysfunction in the body so that we can help to prevent pain and/or injury from occurring. We use this screen to assess you everyday movement and can determine your risk for injury. What if you have already experienced pain or an injury? The FMS is still applicable as it will help to assess how you are moving now and address movement dysfunctions to prevent additional incidents of pain/injury from occurring in the future.

Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA):

The SFMA is a comprehensive movement assessment that is performed on patients/clients or athletes who are currently experiencing pain. The SFMA is more in depth than the FMS and uncovers the specific type of movement dysfunction (mobility, stability or control) that is the resulting in perpetuating the movement dysfunction. This assessment tool carefully guides our clinicians to the most meaningful problems that are limiting progress. The SFMA screens the entire body resulting in the discovery of impairments away from the area of pain or injury that may be contributing to the lack of recovery. Once uncovered our clinicians will create a comprehensive treatment plan to resolve the underlying movement dysfunctions.
